Did I mention I HATE sheetmetal work?
    Post by bluesman2a on May 13, 2006, 2:07pm

Little progress report, been working on repairing the large holes I had to cut to "repair" the damage from the P.O. (looks like he just beat the crap outta the firewall to "clearance" and then gnawed through the sheet with a dull gerbil where he needed a hole.

    Before:

    After:

New plate to mount forward battery-box.

I'll tell you, while I don't much care for this work, for anybody who has to do it, .023 wire makes ALL the difference in the WORLD. I was actually able to lay a pretty decent bead and not have to "spot" everything. No warping, not a lot of heat transfer into the work piece.

I probably could have made it look a little better with some filler, but it's solid and water tight for now, that's all I care about...

    Looks great guy.

I cant help but notice the steering column and shaft that connects to your psc unit.

Where did you get these items?

My PSC unit is on the way, was thinking of going with a tilt column why I am at it.

Thanks for the kind words, Chris. It's all actually aftermarket. You can get a couple more pics of the install here:
    http://www.sjmembers.com/gallery/vie...umName=album40

    Part numbers are as follows:
    IDT-1120300010 STEERING COLUMN
    http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.....ts=false&N=115

    IDT-2401300010 2 ADJUSTABLE FLOOR MOUNT

IDT-2401500040 2 SWIVEL BALL FLOOR MOUNT
    http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.....earch&DDS=1&N=0

I also had a borgeson steering shaft (for a CJ) that worked well after I cut it down a little. A donor from a waggie or CJ would also work with the proper ends, but both are notorious for slop.

If you are buying a NEW steering shaft, and you are using the aftermarket column, you will need the standard CJ connector on the box side (not sure of spline count and on the other side you will need a 1" DD to 1" DD steering u-joint to connect to the column.

If you have questions, feel free to either pm or email me. This stuff isn't hard, but it's tedious and a couple of little gotchas, be happy to share what I've learned.

If there's interest, I'd be happy to do a steering post for a sticky on the new board when it comes back.

Is this the best borgeson shaft for the job ?

    http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail....15&autoview=sku

or this one which has a shorter extension range but is for manual steering.

    Chris,

The problem you are going to see is that if you order the stock one you'll need to put a different end on one side like I did. Not sure which is more economical, but you could also build your own using the separate components as below:

    This shaft (universal)
    http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...115+4294849064

This Joint for the steering column side, assuming you are using the aftermarket like I did (1" DD to 1"DD)
    http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail....5 &autoview=sku

On the box side you will need a 3/4" DD to a splined 13/16-36 input for the PSC steering box.
