Thread: what's this steering joint?

  1. #1

    Question what's this steering joint?

All, I can't figure out what joint this is called. It's on the steering shaft right after it exits the firewall. Mine is fubar'd (boot torn, grease everywhere) and I need a new one. I don't really want to replace the steering column but I'm not finding any options on google. So does anybody know the actual name of this joint and places that I can find it? Thanks for the help.

Group 14 in the -34P TM. Called a coupling. Others call it a CV joint sometimes.

Is that the joint called the rag joint? I am guessing the rag joint is probably lower down but you never know how trucks get modded over time...

The rag joint is lower down as you suggested at the other end of the shaft. I think that these couplings may be somewhat standard. I was able to get new parts for mine several years ago but don’t remember where. I checked VPW but didn’t see this one. Not much help I know, sorry. When I get back to the I’ll see if I can find more info.

Same as Don, I rebuilt mine with new steel squares, square holder clip thing-ee, a new outer circlip. fresh grease and rubber boot. Can't recall where I got the parts, but I know it was a mainstream place so they are likely still out there and not a lot of dough. There are a couple step by step tutorials on here (or maybe on youtube) about how to change those parts out.
Also, you will likely find that your white plastic bushing at the end of the steering column is significantly worn as well (you can see it in the pic you posted). I think those are M715/725 specific- I think VPW or Memphis still have those.

Thanks for the info all. I'll see if searching it as a coupling/CV joint works. yeah, that bushing may be bad. although, the truck allegedly only has ~20k miles on it

They are standard jeep parts. BJ's offroad has them (or used to, been a while since I bought mine).

ok, so I got the coupler off, am I supposed to take it apart any further than this? Can someone confirm that this coupler will work? I think it will but I'm not sure.

My guess would be that it would not work as in 74 Jeep changed the steering column to accommodate power steering. I realize the part says for manual steering...but the steering wheel the M715 uses was used on all civilian FSJ Jeeps with manual steering from late 62, start of the FSJ's, up to and including 73. Then it was never used after that.
I cannot be absolutely sure but I would think that if this part worked in the older ones, those dates would also be listed...

    Yes, I would call BJ's.
He would know, because he has a M715 of his own.
