    Default Original engine vs swapped

    Out of curiosity ,how many members have the original 230 and how many have swapped in something else ? Not sure how an actual poll is done,maybe someone could start one. What made me think about this was seeing a NOS 230 dist. sell for 291.00 on ebay(which must mean there is a demand for stock parts). Mine will have a stock 230 when time allows to put it in. Anyway what have you got??

    I have stock engine in both M715 and M725. It seems to me many replace the 230 with something more common once the 230 needs costly repairs or they just want more power. My 715 runs pretty good and has enough power for how I use it. The 725 is more of a parts truck at the moment.

    Mine has a rebuilt chevy 230 straight 6 swapped in by a previous owner. About the same hp and torque as the stock 230 but will be much easer to swap in a sml block chevy in the future from this set up.

    Can one of the mods add a poll to this thread? I think it would be interesting to see in a poll something like:

    -Stock engine and stock transmission
    -Swapped engine and stock transmission
    -Swapped engine and different transmission

    I have one M-715 with stock engine/trans, and one M-725 with a 318 and NP435 transmission.

    my truck has a 17,000 mile engine in it and it runs perfect the only thing i can say about it is the rear main seal leaks alittle but not bad . i have another 230 and t-98 with 13,000 miles on it . I plan on putting in a 350 tuned port injection in it later this year . i really at this piont dont have any thoughts of changing the stock trans and t=case . the 350 has some performace parts in it and should be around 280 hp with 350 ft torque and with the tpi injection and tube intake runners lets the engine develope hp and torque at a somewhat low rpm level . but most likely i will put in a 383 stroker kit and a big mouth intake and larger tpi runners with roller cam with roller lifters and the engine will make around 380 hp with 500 ft torque . i think this will get the big 42x16 x16 super swamper tires turning . and love the sound of that sbc with headers and dual exhaust humming down the road !!!!

    I swapped in a 350 in my 725 and the rest of the drivetrain is stock. its not real good on the highway for long drives but works good offroad when you can drive slow. on one of my 715's Im using a 3/4 ton chevy 4x4 frame and running gear for better driveability on the highway. on the other Im totally boxing in the stock frame and contemplating using a hydraulic pivot just behind the cab to make the bed rotate independently from the cab plus 5 ton rockwells and 4 wheel steer. probably going to be running a whipple supercharged 496 with an auto od and an atlas transfer case with probably 3 gears. I built a 632 bbc but after the Col. fe, I sold it and want something with alot of power but still manageable on road too.
    I road in several trucks that were stock and liked the way they did but parts are expensive and hard to find so i took the cheaper way out and parts are readily available. an overdrive tranny and a different transfer case would be a big plus in making your truck more of a highway friendly truck and you'd be better able to stay up with traffic without pushing your engine to hard.

    My old Dept has 2 m715's both have 454's in them not sure on the tranny's everyone just called them "granny tranny's". They are very slow moving on the street only about 50mph tops or they tend to overheat. Offroad however they have all the power you could ask for and more stamina then even the newer trucks from other depts. I havn't got an M715 but I grew up crawling on these trucks and can't wait to find one in my area to get my hands on. When I do I think I'd like to go with a chevy 350 not sure on a tranny but I'm sure by then I'll have some idea of what to do with help from everyone here.
