Thread: Rear Axle Leak

  1. #1

    Default Rear Axle Leak

Does the rear axle gear lube flow all the way out to the hubs? A few weeks ago I drained and filled everything. Now, I noticed a small pool of gear lube under a rear hub. It is leaking between part #33, gasket, and #34, axle. (page 201 in the '34P) I can't see any seals that would prevent the lube from going all the way out there, unlike the front axle. If so, I guess what I need is a new gasket out there

    Yes.
The bearings out there are grease packed when installed but then the long term lube for those bearings is the gear oil from the center section.

new gasket or rtv. For gasket m715 bolt circle pattern might be hard to find. I used RTV with great success.

I'll CAD a pattern and punch it out of gasket material. That worked for other gaskets I needed.

A thin layer of RTV works just fine on axles. I did all of mine on the Deuce and the M715 that way and they are dry as a bone. The gaskets they used originally are extremely thin, like notebook paper and always seem to seep a bit.

I'm having good luck with Mega-Black gasket maker. Just did both front and rear this last weekend. No static leaks but I haven't driven it yet.

Not to steal this thread, but I changed the fluid on the front axle pumpkin a couple weeks ago. I am getting a slow leak out of the drain plug. Is it a good idea to put some type of thread sealer and/or RTV caulk on the drain plug before reinstalling? Thanks.

Well this may be the wrong technology but I put thread tape on my plugs. I figured it couldn't hurt. I dragged it to and from the sandblasters (about 40 miles round trip) and no seep. Before that they seemed to have practically flowed by the look of the accumulation under them.
