    Steering shaft bushing ?
Post by gimpyrobb on May 3, 2006, 8:51pm

In moving around the Kaiser to get it ready for the F.E. I noticed that when I turn the steering wheel to the left, I get a moaning and thumping noise out of what seems to be the shaft in the column(sp?), has this happened to anyone else? I thought it might be the rag joint or something under the hood, but its not. When looking under the hood, it sounds like its behind the firewall.

My CJ did something similar, there is/was a nylon bushing at the bottom of the shaft that was worn out. Got one of my clients, a plastic molding place, make me a new one of that slick hard plastic stuff (i forget the initials of it). Took the tool man about 10 minutes or so.

edit: UHMW or something like that -- ultra high molecular something

UHMW is correct. "Ultra High Molecular Weight" as I understand.

Mine was doing same thing. The bushing at the end of steering shaft was trashed. I got a new one from ab Linn. If you need one and ab doesn't have any more, I think I have 1 more.

Could it be UHDPE? Ultra High Density Polyethelene is used for making bearing products.
