best way to put on fan belts
    Post by maddawg308 on Jul 13, 2006, 11:21am

Okay, this is getting dumber and dumber for you guys with boatloads of M715 experience, but I am new to older engines and need to find my way around them slowly. Am used to serpentine belts of newer cars, with spring-loaded adjusters that you just pull back with a crowbar and seat the belt, no fuss no muss.

How do you put these stupid -715 fan belts on the stock engine? Can't stretch them around the pulleys without busting a gut. Any pointers?

The alternator should have a bracket with a long slot. Loosen the clamp bolt on the slot, loosen the pivot bolt or bolts at the other side of the alternator and it should swing in toward the engine for belt clearance.

Then once the belts are one pull the altinator back to tighten the belts. Sometimes a pribar may be needed to get the right tightness. Then you tighten it bolt back down. Also when loosening you may need to loosen the bolts slightly at the bottom of the altinator to help it with it's piviting.

one of the many problems with the 230 is the water pump bearings. there are few nos ones around and from what i'm told they are difficult to rebuild correctly.

when putting tension on the belts, put just enough to spin the pump and generator. to much tension and you could shorten the life of your water pump.

Using only one belt will help with bearing life, too.

The belt slot closer to the pump...

Also agree with warwick on the tension...don't get carried away.
