Thread: Axle swap help

    Default Axle swap help

I've read all 12 pages of the axle swap thread and still a bit confused.

    My plans:
Not really a wheeler. It will be a pavement princess with 37s.
I will be swapping a 401/th400/D20 so it's passenger side drop. I plan on staying spring under up front.

I'm assuming 4.10 is the gearing I should look for to achieve a doable rpm at 60 ish mph.

I believe the G30 rear is what I need, but the front is what I'm unsure about.

What front (and rear) axles should I use and from what year range please?

Thanks in advance as I didn't find this specific plan discussed anywhere.

Also, it's possible a 700/4R could be used to get
    Overdrive.

Really limited by only your fabrication abilities...

I'm Putting a late 80's-mid 90's kingpin Ford Dana 60 (driver side drop) in Spring Under Configuration up front...

1988 Ford Sterling Rear out back... with a disc brake conversion

Cummins 5.9L Turbodiesel, Ford ZF S542 5 Speed OD manual, Ford married NP205 (driver side drop)

power steering, hydroboosted brakes, 4 wheel disc brakes, and readily available parts for engine, transmission, clutch, transfercase, wheels, tires, brakes, bearings etc all "in-stock" at my local part house vs. trying to find the golden goose of parts.

Mine will also be an on-road tow/haul pig and occasional firewood adventures into the woods

    Its in there.

You want passenger drop so Chevy is what you'd want. No solid front axles after 87 (91 in Suburbans and 1 tons) so older than that. That leave you with a Dana 60 or 3/4 ton 8 lug Dana 44 or 10 bolt (basically same axles, 10 bolts were made my chevy). Mall crawler on 37s, a 44 (or 10 bolt) would be fine.

Now both of those axles came from the factory spring over, you'll have to cut and fabricate to make the spring under. Dana 60 has a cast in spring perch on the passenger side, people have worked around it though. Dana 44 (or 10 bolt) you should be able to cut the factory perches off and weld new ones on bottom for spring under.

Thanks! That 3/4 ton 8 lug D44 saves a LOT of money over the ton D60! So you agree that the ton can 14 bolt rear axle is what I need?

You will get better brakes and wheel bearings with the 60 (for 37s)....I am going 37ish and 4.56 with an OD NV 4500. Find a site where you can do the RPM check with the th400 and the 700 and see if the 410 or 456 works for you...
    Is that real money?

Welcome to the best gearing calculator I've ever found:

    4.10: 2500 vs 1700 (th400 vs 700/4R) at 65 mph on 37s.

    4.56: 2800 vs 1900

Either is doable. 4.10, either trans would work.
4.56 would need the overdrive I think.

Lots of price difference in the 60 and the 44, obviously.

Just don't pull the trigger too early and keep an eye out for a 60...if you end up with a 44 so be...Maybe there are hot rod brake upgrades?
