Thread: Starter death.

  1. #1

    Default Starter death.

Well, my starter has departed. I took it to a local auto electric shop for a rebuild and upon disassembly, they found that the armature shaft had snapped at the starter drive retaining pin hole.

Apparently, there was a crack there from way back as a close examination showed that part of the break was blackened. Funny thing was, the thing would actually work intermittently. It seems that the drive would hit the flywheel and cause enough pressure to force the pieces together enough to occasionally turn the engine over.

Oh well. I took my other dead starter in today to try to combine the two to make one.

I'll post a picture of the damage soon.

Are you still 24V? I ask because a civilian 230 from a FSJ will work great on 12V.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.

Here is a picture of the snapped armature shaft. The brushes were toast in starter number two.

The shop took the best of both and charged me $75.

Being ths is the most powerful Tornado engine in the word and would snap your armature shaft clean off....

Good shot of the carnage...glad you had the other one to work it out...I take it you do have a good working starter now?
