What to use? Close to finishing.
Post by porkchop on Aug 7, 2006, 7:15pm

I am at the point where I need to get a coil. Now I know they don't make a 24V coil other than the water proof type used on the M-trucks. I was told a while back that I could use a 3.0 ohm coil and a inline 3.0 ohm resistor and it will work fine with the 24 volt system. I have also thought about getting a small convertor to use for the coil only. That is my last real hurdle. I hope.

I figure for the starter just get a 24v selinoid. They sell them here in town. Anyone see any problems with this?

Hey PC. look into a Unimog coil, I believe they have a type of external 24v coil, not only that but there is a Pertronix electronic ignition kit that could be swaped in if you are running points. Good luck.
Not to bring up a bad subject,, but is everything going better with your civy truck now?

Check with the parts stores like NAPA. There are 24V coils on the market. Normally for construction equipment and the like, but it should work.

I look at all the parts store and no one has a 24v coil. I can't even find them by doing a search. I am running points, so how is 24v coil going to affect that, it shouldn't right? I am thinking at this point just getting a small adapter to convert the power before it gets to the coil. quick and easy.

The civie truck is still acting up. I filed a complant with the BBB and American engine installations had until yesterday to reply but they didn't. So they send them a certified letter that they have until the 18th to reply. If they don't reply then they are removed from the BBB list and the BBB helps me with small claims court. If they don't respond it really makes them look bad. I am sure it is going to go to court but I just didn't want the headache.

I just did a Google search for unimog. all kinds of dealers and sights. I would try a sight that says they do 12 volt conversions, as they might sell you a used one cheap.

I have run 6 volt coils on 12V for many miles, same with starters, so I don't think 24V would hurt either your stock starter and solinoid or your coil. Carry an extra set of points in case they burn, but other than that you should be fine.
