Thread: NP200 Idler gear Removal

  1. #1

    Default e brake help!

I've removed everything in my NP200 except the shift forks/rails and the dual gear assembly in the middle. A few taps on each end doesn't free it. How do I remove that middle gear set?

Is there a TM that has rebuild specs or an exploded parts view for this NP200?

    Thanks for any help,
    Grant

There are 2 manual sections to look at...the first is the detailed stuff on teardown and rebuild:
    http://www.m715zone.com/manuals/34/chapter12.html
The 2nd is the removal, reinstall and external adjustments, like shift linkage, etc.

That should do ya...let us know if ya need more.

Thanks guys. I just spent the past 4 hours kneeling over my 200.

"Drive shaft from case using a plastic hammer." Thats a good one. It took a drift and some hard whacks to get it past the first bearing. After that it went good. Is this normal? I don't know of ANY plastic hammer that would have done what was needed to remove my shaft.

Another thing, the manual says that you have to use the screw arbor tool to reassemble the idler gear assembley (to not damage the shim). I noticed that until you put the 196ft/lbs onto the shaft that the last bearing has a little wiggle. Would it be possible to put the case together without this arbor thing?

This is my first t-case/transmission rebuild. What an experience.

Grant, I used an aluminum drift and bigass ball pein hammer or single jack. It was hard and fought me most of the way out.

The arbor is to keep the little shim pack in alignment as you drive the idler shaft back in place. Without it you risk the shims moving around and at best not allowing the shaft to pass. At worst you'll munch or bend part of the shim which could cause other problems. I think I'll set the case on it's side and carefully insert the shaft, with the shims on the low side of the assembly. Once the shaft is past them it should be a breeze (a hammer induced breeze).
