Thread: Oil Leak.

  1. #1

    Default Oil Leak.

I have been fighting an oil leak now for a while. I have replaced the valve cover gasket and it is not leaking now. I have replaced the hose from the head to the oil pressure sending unit with a steel line. I am still getting an oil leak from the back of the engine. There is an expansion plug(freeze plug) in the rear of the head and also one in the block just below the one in the head. Could either one of these possible leak oil? Does anyone on the site have a 230 out of the frame that can take a look at the rear of the engine and see if there is anyother place such as a pipe plug that could leak oil on the rear of the engine.

I dont believe there is anything else north of the oil pan and rear main seal...

A shot of the back of the motor:

Both of those freeze plugs on the rear are coolant ports...

Thanks Brute for the picture. I don't know where it is coming from.
I'll have to scratch my head some more!

Is it possible that the fitting that the oil line screws to is leaking at the block?

Dont know what you can see...but I suppose it could be a head gasket leak...

My personal guess is the brass fitting at the back of the head is cracked.

Use some of the purple degreaser from the auto parts stores, plug a few quarters into the local car wash and get everything really clean. Then drive or run it and use a light and mirror to see the highest point of leakeage.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.

Good thought Barrman...the elbow being cracked makes good sense.

It is not the elbow fitting, I just replaced it with a new one. Could it be the head gasket leaking oil?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's any oil going through the head gasket back there.

The rear of the block has 2 holes that drain oil back to the pan...marked with ^ in this view:

Here is a diagram of the oil circulation in the motor:

Thanks guys, I have everything cleaned off good, will let it run some and see if I can see if it is coming from the head.
