Thread: Twisted front axle

    Default Twisted front axle

This pic is of my stock front short shaft. I've know for a long time it was the weak link in the stock drive line. It come out of a open diff, stock 230 truck that run 44's at one time.
Has anyone been able to come up with a good aftermarket swap, of better quality? Correct me if i'm wrong. I believe ford run the 30 spline up untill sometime in the 90's. Does any of fords axles swap into these stock axles? I was thinking say something like a high alloy 30 spline from a 90's Dana 60? Has anyone found a good fit?

    Your thoughs?

That's a pretty common weak link, even in stock form. The front closed knuckle Dana 60 in the M715 is somewhere around the same strength as a Dana 44, give or take a bit.

Somewhere, and I am sure Jon knows where, there is a link to a website where a guy was modding the closed knuckle 60 with heavier shafts, but if I recall correctly, it took a lot of machining and mods to get anything else in there. Seems like the axle tube and knuckle were the limitations.

In my opinion, there is no greater bang for the buck than switching to more modern axles. A pair of D60/D70, D60/14B will give you disk brakes (front), open knuckles (front), a very common lug pattern, much stronger axleshafts, much better parts availability...

Plus the usual 4.56 or 4.10 gear set will make the M715 highway capable and save a ton on gas. Unless you are running big tires or a rock crawler.

Yes very true. The best would be a swap to 60/70 or 60/14. was wondering if anyone had looked into the possibliity of better axles with in the stock Diff.

First thing I did was swap in a D60/14-bolt set from a M1009. Popular wheel pattern, disc brakes, lock-out hubs, 4,56 ratio....
I initially attempted to co-exist with the stock diffs, but determined in the long run that the swap was more cost and performance effective for my particular requirements.

Does the D60 diff come out on the Pass side or Drivers? and what is the WMS to WMS?

All the CUCV's (except the Blazer) had a pass side diff - d60/14b, rear locker, 4.56 r&p, and front disk brakes. Perfect for the 715.
If you are going spring over it is real easy, but keeping the stock spring under is only a little more work. For the back you do have to add disk brakes - still cheap

The blazer had 10 bolt rear axles.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.
