Thread: M715 Original MSRP?

    Default M715 Original MSRP?

    Hi all,
Does anyone have a document which shows what the original MSRP was for the M715? (any year would be good).

The state of Nevada, in it's infinite wisdom, decided that the MSRP for my '68 M715 was $31,500.00. I have a hard time believing that because you could buy a whole house for less than 1/2 that price in 1968! That would make the truck today cost around $472,000!

The reason I ask is that I had to pay annual registration based upon the original MSRP. It has crept into my mind that maybe the $1300 in tax and registration I paid to the DMV to get the truck registered may be a *tad* too much...

Development of the M715 series of 1¼ ton trucks came from the 'Jeep Gladiator' by the Kaiser Jeep Corporation started in 1965. They were designed to replace the Dodge M37 series ¾ ton trucks which had been in military service since 1950. The M715 was the first 'M' series tactical vehicle to use primarily civilian commercial components. The first contract was awarded to Kaiser Jeep on March 21, 1966 for 20,680 examples of M715 cargo and M725 ambulance versions at approximately $4,400 per truck. They were delivered between January, 1967 and May, 1969.

    Hi M38inmaine,
Where exactly (URL) did you find that price listed? I searched for that NSN number and couldn't find the price listed anywhere. Sure, I can ask for a quote, but how likely am I to receive one on such an old vehicle? I thought it would be highly unlikely.

I need credible documentation or the DMV will just laugh in my face, when I ask for some money back. Heck, they may do that anyway...

Attacking from a different angle, if this is true for the M37, the army did not save money paying 13 or 30 thousand dollars for each M715. Even with what? 10 or 15 years inflation?

I do not know what the surcharge was at that time, but today it floats around the 20-30% mark, this covers the cost of storage, transport plus the logistics overhead for all the AMC employees etc.... so if you do the math, they paid $3k for a truck...

Without finding an actual contract, this is my best guess.

    So $3k early 50s M37 to $4400 late 60s M715. Sounds reasonable to me.

I found an NSN website that listed the M715 MSRP as $13,283.00, which is a lot better than the $31,000.00 that the DMV in Nevada told me when I registered the truck. The annual cost of registration depends on MSRP, so I figured any reduction in the amount would be better than none.

Well, the DMV told me that the $13,283 is wrong. "Uh oh", I said. "What are they saying it is?"

She told me that the DMV checks a different site and that the MSRP for my truck is is only...wait for it....$2000! Even if they are wrong...this time I don't care. haha

That means my annual registration fee for that truck is only $65! Nevada is still the wild wild west!
