Thread: Paint color for the markings...

Default Paint color for the markings...

I am getting way ahead of the progress, but planning never stops!
I understand that the M715's in Europe had flat black markings. Was all of the lettering, TP, inner door markings, etc. done that way, or just the main ID numbers?
Anyone have pictures of one done with the flat back markings. I think I want the subdued look, so I'm leaning that way.

In the early 70's right before the switch to 4 color camo, many vehicles were marked with flat black to subdue the markings making them harder to see than one with white markings. This was something that we learned in Vietnam, that big white stars on the doors made excellent aiming points. But in the late 60's (when these trucks were issued)they were still using the white markings. Most stayed that way until they were repainted at the motorpools. Here is a pic of a M37 that I did decals for that are done in flat black on solid 24087 green.

In Europe espically in Germany in the late sixties as guys who were making a career out of the Army got rotated out of Nam they would do a tour in Germany...Remember Vietnam was not the main mission of the US Army, but being ready to fight WWIII with the Russians was.....anyway units in Germany started doing their markings in flat black. As Beast said it was pre-cammo and the flat black markings seemed to be the first step. I had a friend who served in Germany in 1968 prior to going to Vietnam and I remember some of his photos that had vehicles in the motorpool in both 24087 with flat black markings and some in 24087 with white markings.....I remember one photo of one motorpool that had 24087 with whit markings and the soldiers were waxing them to make them shinnier..... This leads me to think that the issue was not a army wide standard, but unit level standard.

If you do a web search for the Army in 1960's Germany you might find some pics to back your vehicle up.....

If you check this picture out it is not the best, but it shows an M151 in MP markings if you look closely to the hood the registration number is in flat black.
