Thread: Generator

My truck seems to have a generator, not an alternator. Is this unusual. The reason why I am asking is that I just replaced the generator with another of the same model. The small lead was missing.

It seems to charge and the gauge works whether this wire is attached or not. I

Mine says generator. Everyone says alternator. As I get older I have learned some things don't matter any more. It's a 68. Sorry I didn't answer your question.

Not sure why a stock one would do this!!

Does your battery drain when connected and the engine not started for while?

Can you post a picture of one of these?

These trucks all came with alternators though the nomenclature for the parts was sometimes printed as Generator...as in the thing that generates power not the actually type of device...

A pic would be helpful...just in case someone actually made such a swap on yours...

Does it have the FSN number printed on it...should be easy to google that...

It is an alternator and it is the mil standard mount pattern...a lot of trucks use it...

If the small wire isnt hooked up, seems like it shouldnt charge...that is the "excite" wire...the small power in to start the charging field...odd...

What I noticed was that the original on my truck wasn't charging the batteries as the gauge was steadily dropping into the yellow. I was in a Dyngus parade on Easter Monday. The bed was packed with Polka musicians and kids in traditional Polish garb. So I deftly kept the thing running until I could park it.

Then I charged the batteries, which made a huge difference in starting. Then swapped out the alt (which is a PITA, although not as bad as the starter). The 568 lead was missing on the new one. The gauge read properly. I still made up an insulated alligator clip lead as a temporary replacement setup, until I can get a scrap lead to re solder.

I'm taking the original to the shop for a go over anyway.

There is a little screw under a plug on the alternator that you can adjust to get the the alternator to charge properly. I have had to adjust mine when it wasn't outputing enough voltage. You want about 28 vdc output.
